The Tongue is central to correct trumpet playing because it helps direct the air and shape the response of the instrument.
Many playing problems are connected to misunderstanding the tongue. Range, response, flexibility, accuracy, and endurance can all suffer when the tongue is too low, too tense, or not coordinated with the air.
In the Clarke–Gordon tradition, the tongue is not treated as a gimmick or shortcut. It works together with Wind Power, Wind Control, and the other coordinated principles of correct playing.
